Data Methodology and Sources

This page documents how the public food records are transformed, labeled, checked, and corrected.

FODMAP fields

Food ratings, laboratory-style traffic-light levels, portions, and source comments are imported from the project source export. The export reflects data associated with Monash University FODMAP research; this site is independent and is not endorsed by Monash University. Because the supplied export does not include a record-level publication URL, we link every record to this provenance statement instead of inventing a more precise citation.

Nutrition and energy

Nutrition values are displayed per 100 g when supplied. The source energy field is stored as kilojoules (kJ). Kilocalories are derived by dividing kJ by 4.184 and rounded to one decimal place. Values outside a plausible 0–4,000 kJ per 100 g range are suppressed and flagged by automated validation.

Serving interpretation

The page-level rating follows the most permissive tested portion available in the source record: low, then moderate, then high. Every record-specific source comment is displayed beside its portion. Generic explanatory text is kept separate.

Review and update process

Automated checks reject legacy calorie fields, invalid energy ranges, negative nutrition values, and serving records without a title or source comment. Editorial updates are made when the source export changes or a correction is verified. The database-wide review date is shown on each food page.

Licensing and reuse

The website code is MIT-licensed. That license does not grant rights to redistribute third-party source data, trademarks, images, or research. The JSON API is provided for factual lookup and interoperability under the site terms; users must assess rights for downstream reuse.
